Living Fit 20 years celebration Luncheon at Empire Living
CONNECTING TO YOUR HEART WISDOM at Lockton Farm, Wasi Falls
with Paige Lockton Wylde
Hello fellow empowered Women10!
Thank you for sharing your time and interest in my programs about horses, how they communicate energetically, self-regulation and how HeartMath tools can help.
Mornings on the farm are beautiful and I will save Summer Fridays at 9AM for Women10 at a special rate just for you! This offer will only be extended to members who have attended the May 27th presentation ‘The Art and Science of Connection, Self-regulation and Communication’, so there is a background of understanding before the in-barn experience.
I am going to reduce the group size from 5, to 2, to create a more intimate experience, but I will keep the price per person the same.
1) Introduction to HeartMath and Horses
Mini-Workshop: 1-hour at Lockton Farms, #310 Hwy 654 W in Callander, home of Take The Lead
Will include:
• Introduction to the HeartMath tool
• Focused practice of Heart Focussed Breathing Technique
• Applications to nervous system regulation
• Individualized experience with the horses
• Debrief
*$80 flat rate ($40 per person)
The 1 hour experience is strictly in-barn, with limited horse interaction (meditating/breathing with and grooming). A meditation with the horses and practice self-regulating with the HM tools and noticing how it affects our animal interactions and how we feel - just like what you witnessed in the barn Zoom session on June 3rd. This will be a glimpse of the possibilities!
2) I will also provide the option of a 1.5 hr version, which includes all of the above plus a broader experience, which would allow a larger tour of the farm and all of its animals. Also for groups of 2.
* $60/each or a total of $120/1.5 hrs.

Hariett:
First, let me thank you for the time last week to have a productive chat with the gang at Living Fit. It’s always the one that makes me feel plugged in; closer to home.
A couple of issues were left not fully answered, and I wanted to share some further thoughts, albeit in point-form notes. (Please feel free to share)
Long Term Care
There were several questions about the support for Long Term Care facilities, and I trust these few points will complete the conversation … (Click on blue link for news release) ...
4-hours of care: - plus wage increases for PSWs
- 50,000 eligible PSWs got $3/hour wage increases effective October 2020
- Announced in November, each long-term care resident will get an average of four hours of direct care per day. This commitment will make Ontario the leader among Canadian provinces in the provision of care for long-term care residents. Announced in the budget.
Recruiting an additional 3,700 frontline workers for the LTC system
- Part of the 4 hours of care reform. Includes PSW & Nurse Return of Service program, Ontario Workforce Reserve for Senior Support program, mass training program within colleges, PSW Fast Track Program, Nurse Practitioner program
Early COVID funding
- Early funding of $243M announced in March for surge capacity in homes, while supporting 24/7 screening, more staffing and supplies and equipment
Fall Preparedness plan
- $540M plan announced in September to ensure necessary renovations and measures to improve infection prevention and control, shoring up personal protective equipment (PPE) stockpiles, and building a strong health care workforce.
Building Program: - 74 LTC homes & 11,000 spaces (almost 4,000 new beds, redevelop 6,800 old beds)
- $761M announced in November as part of the province's new funding model that helps break down historic barriers and accelerates the construction of urgently needed long-term care projects, providing seniors with the high-quality care they deserve. Takes total funding over next 30 years to almost $9B.
Conservation Authorities
You had also asked me about the local Conservation Authority, and I trust these few points will complete the conversation …
For the past year and a half, our government has been consulting on the role of conservation authorities.
Our proposed changes would make sure conservation authorities are focused on delivering the programs they were designed to deliver, like flood mitigation, protecting sources of drinking water, and managing conservation-authority owned lands.
Despite some of the opposition reports, Municipalities would also have more say over the services they pay for, and conservation authorities would be required to be more transparent in the decisions they make.
To be clear, there would be no change to the core mandate of conservation authorities, and authorities will continue their key role in resource and natural hazard management in the province.
The Ontario government is creating a working group to help implement changes to the Conservation Authorities Act. Hassaan Basit, President and CEO of Conservation Halton will chair the new group which will provide input on how conservation authorities are governed.
- The working group will also provide input on development of regulations to ensure conservation authorities are focused on their core mandate and serving the needs of their communities.
- The new working group will include representatives from the conservation authorities and other experts. Group members will be announced in the coming weeks.
- The working group has been operational since January, and will provide input to help the province develop regulations that will focus on:
- The mandatory core programs and services conservation authorities would be required to provide,
- The agreements between municipalities and conservation authorities and the transition period for non-mandatory programs and services, and that will give municipalities more say over the non-mandatory programs and services they pay for.
- How local members of the community can participate in their conservation authorities through community advisory boards.
- In addition to the input provided by Hassaan Basit and the working group, Ontario will also be seeking the public’s feedback on regulatory and governance proposals through the Environmental Registry. Public consultation on these proposals is also expected to begin early in the new year.
Hope these add some clarity.
Thanks again for the opportunity to connect,

As promised, the results of my research:
Apoaequorin Evidence Summary Serious doubts about apoaequorin are raised by a chemical structure that is most likely broken down in the gut before reaching the brain.
Neuroprotective Benefit: The manufacturer ran a randomized controlled trial claiming that apoaequorin improves cognitive function but no differences were shown from controls. Strong evidence suggests apoaequorin is digested in the stomach before it reaches the brain.
Aging and related health concerns: No data on lifespan or age-related disease exist. Insufficient data exists on whether it slows progression of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in humans. Protection from ischemic cell death is seen, though only when applied directly onto rat brain slices.
Safety: Widespread consumer use and a 90-day randomized controlled trial in older adults suggest that apoaequorin is well-tolerated. High dose or long-term use has not been studied in humans.

A Corona Virus Covid 19 Story...
So I went looking for a thermometer as Jill advised and need up with this kid's one. Lee and I affectionately calling it 'Kermit'. Kermit can replaced under the tongue, under the armpit and, yes, in the rectum. I have kindly asked Lee to let me know where he is inserting this little critter just in case I have to go out and buy another. Know what I'm saying'????

CHRISTMAS 2019...WASN'T THAT A PARTY!!!
Back from my trip to Toronto, a wonderful visit with my daughter and grandchildren. Lots of hugs and stories, then off to Calgary to visit with my other daughter and family, more love, more laughter, more beautiful experiences, including tree decorating, and baking with 4 grandchildren. Embraced the chaos... Got to witness the wonder in the eyes of the 2 year old twins as they learned and began to understand about Christmas and Santa for the first time, and the big kids got to buy presents for their parents, so excited about gifting others instead of receiving.
Feeling very grateful, for the many Christmases I've had, filled with family and friends, especially Living Fit.
See you January 6, with guest, Dr. Kristin Shepherd, 'Creativity, Gratitude and Empowerment', Part 2 of her playwriting process. Another exquisite experience, of which we get to play a part.
Wishing you all the best in 2020!

As part of the Fundraising Campaign, for the Special Olympics, Living Fit members adopted an athlete. Her name was Angela Howells, a snow-shoe athlete from Elliot Lake. We decided to make a card for her with a picture of the girls from Living Fit and messages of encouragement. As I was working at the Clarion, I would take the card with me to give to her. I found Angela sitting with her coaches and teammates in the Athletes' Lounge. I introduced myself and presented her with the card and showed her our picture and messages explaining to her that our group, Living Fit had adopted her. I gave her a hug and wished her well, telling her to have a great weekend. Her teammates were gathered all around with big smiles.
As I turned to leave, Angela turned to her friend and said, "I'm adopted??"
Thanks to Debbie & Bonnie for creating this card for our Special Olympian, Angela Howells, competitor to be presented to her by Janie Fry at the snowshoeing event.

*I got this tasty recipe from my daughter-in-law. It makes a lot of granola bars (48 to 60 servings) so you may want to half this recipe.

1 1/2 cups peanut butter
1 1/2 tbsp. vanilla
2 cups brown sugar
1 cup corn syrup
6 cups oats, large flaked oats.
1 cup coconut. toasted

2 cup chocolate chip or 1 cup raisins and 1 cup chocolate chips.
METHOD.
1. In a skillet, toast coconut, sunflower seeds and sesame seeds and set aside to cool.
2. In a large mixing bowl, cream together butter, peanut butter, vanilla and brown sugar.
3. Add corn syrup and then mix in remaining ingredients.
4. Press into a greased 2 (9 x13 in pans).
5. Bake 350 F, for approximately 20 minutes or until golden brown.
6. Let cool slightly and cut while still warm.
SUBSTITUTE toasted almonds and 1 tsp almond extract for the sunflower sees and vanilla is you want to switch it a little.
OLD FASHIONED LEMONADE
2 cups sugar and 2 cups of water to make a syrup
(8 lemons total)
Juice 3 lemons and cut the rinds in thin strips; add to syrup and boil 5 minutes.
Let the syrup cool and add the juice of the other 5 lemons.
Keep in the fridge in a mason jar.
To prepare a drink:
Use 2 to 4 tsp of syrup per glass, with ice cubes, perrier or water. And for an afternoon or evening beverage try adding 1 oz of good gin. My children just loved this...with the gin of course.
YUMMY CAESAR SALAD DRESSING
1/8 cup mayonnaise (Miracle Whip, low fat)
Juice of 1/2 lemon
zest of 1/2 lemon (rind)
1 to 2 garlic cloves, minced
2 to 4 sprigs parsley, chopped
Salt and pepper to taste
Mix all ingredients together and pour over romaine lettuce, and other vegetables.
Optional: Add 2 slices of cooked chopped bacon to the salad for more flavour, and, sadly, a little more fat. This recipe came from a dear friend from Toronto, Liz Wagner.

You can use chicken breasts or legs with this recipe if preferred but a whole chicken has the best texture. Use an ovenproof casserole that fits the chicken snugly, rather than a larger one. The texture of the chicken remains juicy and the taste is very flavourful. If you do not have a casserole that goes on top of the stove then use a skillet and transfer to your ovenproof dish.
Spice Mixture
1 tsp (5 mL) cracked fennel
1 tsp (5 mL) cracked coriander
2 tsp (10 mL) chopped fresh thyme
1 tsp (5 mL) cracked black pepper
Chicken
One 4 lb (2 kg) whole chicken, or chicken peices (I used chicken breast, boneless)
1 tbsp (15 mL) vegetable oil
2 tbsp (25 mL) butter
2 Pink Lady or Royal Gala apples, peeled and diced into ½-inch (1-cm) chunks
1 cup (250 mL) apple cider (I used a Prs. Choice natural apple jiuce)
1 tbsp (15 mL) cider vinegar
½ cup (125 mL) whipping cream
1 tbsp (15 mL) lemon juice
2 tbsp (25 mL) chopped chervil or parsley
Salt and freshly ground pepper
1. Preheat oven to 300ºF (150ºC).
2. Combine fennel, coriander, thyme and black pepper. Reserve 1 tsp (5 mL) spice mixture and season chicken all over with remaining mixture, adding a little inside.
3. Heat oil and 1 tbsp (15 mL) butter in an ovenproof casserole over medium-high heat. Brown chicken about 2 minutes per side or until golden. Remove from pan. Discard fat and wipe out pan.
4. Add remaining butter and apples to pan and sauté for 2 minutes or until tinged with gold. Pour in cider and cider vinegar, add remaining spice mixture and bring to boil. Boil for 1 minute.
5. Return chicken to casserole, cover and bake for 1 hour. Remove lid and bake 15 minutes longer or until juices run clear.
6. Remove chicken and apples from casserole. Add cream to sauce and bring to boil. Boil for 2 minutes or until sauce begins to thicken. Add lemon juice, reserved apples and chervil and simmer for 1 minute more. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Cut chicken into 4 serving pieces and pour sauce over chicken to serve. Surround with apples.

Bread Machine ‘Melt in your mouth’ Rolls
1/2 cup softened butter
1/4 cup sugar
3/4 teaspoon salt
4 cups bread flour
2 eggs
2 1/2 teaspoon rapid rise yeast
Place the above ingredients in your bread machine in order recommended by your instruction book and use the dough cycle.
Remove the dough from the machine and knead gently on lightly floured surface.
Divide and shape into 24 smooth round balls. Place the rolls about 3/4 inch apart on a greased cookie sheet. Cover with a cloth and allow double in a warm place.
Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for about 18 minutes. I brush them with butter when I take them out of the oven to keep the tops soft.
Substitute 1 cup of wheat flour for one cup of the bread flour for wheat rolls for a healthier version.
*I made these rolls for Thanksgiving dinner at a friend’s home And they were a big hit!

Bulgur with Herbs (from Gourmet, Sept. 2009)
1 cup bulgur
2 cups boiling-hot water
2 tablespoons olive oil
1/4 cup sliced almonds
1 cup chopped scallions (from 1 bunch)
1/2 cup chopped cilantro
1/2 cup chopped mint
1 tablespoon store-bought roasted-almond oil or olive oil
1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice, or to taste
Preparation
Put bulgur in a bowl, then pour hot water (2 cups) over it and cover bowl with plastic wrap. Let stand until tender, about 10 minutes.
Meanwhile, heat olive oil in a small heavy skillet over medium heat until hot, then cook almonds, stirring, until golden, about 1 minute.
Drain bulgur if necessary, then return to bowl and stir in scallions, herbs, store-bought roasted-almond oil (or additional olive oil), 1 teaspoon lemon juice, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon pepper, and almonds (with oil). Season with salt and more lemon juice if desired. Serve at room temperature. (4 servings)
Short ribs with Braised Vegetables (Autumn 2007, LCBO)
I have made these dishes a few times for dinner parties, I like it because I can make it ahead and the flavors are sensational. The vegetables are the garnish for the short ribs or may be used as a side dish for any braised meat.
3 cups (750 mL) peeled and diced rutabaga 1-inch (2.5-cm) pieces) (I used small white turnips)
3 cups (750 mL) diced carrots 1-inch (2.5-cm) pieces
3 cups (750 mL) trimmed and halved Brussels sprouts
¼ cup (50 mL) olive oil
Salt and freshly ground pepper
6 sprigs of rosemary
1. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
2. Add rutabaga to a pot of cold water. Bring to boil and boil for 4 to 5 minutes or until rutabaga has some give when pierced with a fork. Drain and remove to a bowl. Add carrots and Brussels sprouts and toss with oil. Season with salt and pepper. Lay on oiled baking sheet and sprinkle with rosemary sprigs.
3. Roast vegetables stirring occasionally, for 15 to 20 minutes or until tender.
4. To serve, place potato gratin and short rib on a plate, surround with vegetables and pour over sauce. (Serve with Short Ribs and Potato Gratin (recipes follow).
Serves 8 to 10
Short Ribs
It is best to make this outstanding, flavourful dish a couple of days ahead. Once cooked, chill well and then remove the fat. There are different kinds of short ribs and any will do but I prefer the ones that come from under the brisket which do not have the tougher top layer. They are sometimes called Miami ribs.
6 beef short ribs, 14 to 16 oz (400 to 500 g) each
Marinade
2 tbsp (25 mL) olive oil
1 tbsp (15 mL) chopped fresh thyme leaves
1 tbsp (15 mL) cracked black pepper
1 tbsp (15 mL) cracked fennel seed
2 tbsp (25 mL) thinly sliced garlic
Salt to taste
Sauce
1/3 cup (75 mL) olive oil
2 cups (500 mL) chopped onion
2 tbsp (25 mL) balsamic vinegar
2 cups (500 mL) red wine
4 cups (1 L) beef stock
1 tbsp (15 mL) tomato paste
4 sprigs flat-leaf parsley
2 bay leaves
1. Season short ribs with olive oil, thyme leaves, black pepper, fennel and sliced garlic. Cover and marinate in the refrigerator overnight.
2. Remove ribs from refrigerator an hour before cooking and allow to come to room temperature. Scrape off garlic slices and reserve. Season with salt on all sides.
3. Preheat oven to 300°F (150°C).
4. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat for 2 minutes. Add 3 tbsp (45 mL) olive oil (it should be just about smoking). Working in batches, add short ribs to pan and sear until nicely browned on all three meaty sides, about 1½ to 2 minutes per side. Add more oil as needed. Transfer ribs to a large pot with a lid, standing them bone-side up. Drain skillet reserving 1 tbsp (15 mL) fat for onions.
5. Reduce heat to medium and add onion and reserved garlic slices. Stir, scraping up all the bits from the bottom of the pan. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes or until onions just begin to brown around the edges. Add balsamic vinegar and red wine. Turn heat to high and reduce liquid by half, about 4 minutes. Add stock and tomato paste and bring to a boil.
6. Pour contents of skillet over short ribs. The stock mixture should come to bone level. Tuck parsley sprigs and bay leaves in and around the meat. Cover tightly with aluminum foil and a tight-fitting lid. Braise in the oven for about 3 to 3½ hours or until meat is fork tender.
7. Remove parsley stalks and bay leaves. Chill for 24 hours to make it easier to remove the fat or skim fat from sauce. Reheat ribs and sauce together. Remove ribs to a serving dish. If sauce seems thin, reduce over medium-high heat to thicken slightly. Taste for seasoning and pour over ribs.

Potato Gratin
Rich and delicious, this gratin could be served with any roast. You can use all milk but it is not as luscious.
2 tbsp (25 mL) butter
2 lb (1 kg) Yukon Gold Potatoes, peeled
2 tsp (10 mL) chopped garlic
2 tsp (10 mL) chopped fresh thyme
Salt and freshly ground pepper
1 cup (250 mL) milk
1 cup (250 mL) whipping cream
1. Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C).
2. Butter a 6 cup (1.5 L) gratin dish and reserve.
3. Thinly slice potatoes and place in prepared gratin dish in overlapping layers, sprinkling each layer with garlic, thyme, salt and pepper as you go.
4. Combine milk and cream and season with a little salt. Pour over potatoes.
5. Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes or until potatoes are softened. Remove foil and bake another 30 minutes or until potatoes are very soft and top is a little crusty. Remove from oven and let sit for 10 minutes to allow liquid to reabsorb.

Wrap-up Party June 14....We looked everywhere and not a fluggle could be found!
What is LFIO? Living Fit from the Inside-Out is a women’s *fellowship or sisterhood.
*Fellowship means distinguished, extraordinary. The condition of belonging to the same group, united by the same interests, the same feelings-to live freely and fully, to live passionately, with intention, in love and with purpose.
It’s more than a fellowship; it’s a culture of caring, compassion, beauty and personal growth, ordinary women doing extraordinary things, by connecting with others on the journey to be our best physically, mentally and spiritually.
What do we do?
Every day we re-commit to being better than we were the day before. We are not always successful, but at the end of the day we’ve learned to say things like, it was not perfect, but what a ride!
Or I’m sorry or can I rephrase that? I have learned to embrace my dark side as well as my light. At the end of the day I want to be able to say that my life is better for knowing you and your life is better for knowing me. And everyday we look for the magic in our lives and offer it to others.
But.........Watch out for fluggles! Since "fluggle" refers to a person who is a member of the non-magical community, unable to see the beauty in everyday living, the fluggles are simply ordinary human beings who refuse to be, do and see the extra-ordinary in their lives.
Fluggles are non-magical people, often foolish, sometimes befuddled characters who are completely ignorant of the beautiful benevolent magical world that exists in their midst. If, by unfortunate means, fluggles do happen to observe the working of magic, they seem to forget the magic of the moment very quickly. Living Fit from the Inside-Out refers to a global community that lives hidden in parallel with the fluggle world. We all have a little fluggle that lives inside us, merely for practical reasons. Be very careful if you observe a fluggle in your presence. Their energy can recognize the fluggle in you and will happily welcome you back to the non-magical world. You may feel tempted to tell a fluggle to 'flug off'. But remember that,
"If you judge people, you have no time to love them" (Mother Theresa)
So you, on the other hand, can invite them to the world of magic, simply by letting your loving light shine and remembering how vitally important we all are to the grand scheme of the universe.
Sisterhood/fellowship
ceremony
As a generation, we are growing into our wisdom. The wise have seen the light at the center of things, and the light at the center of things is who we are. We gather today to celebrate this extraordinary assembly of wise women. We are loved.
We are daughter, mother and sister, to the world. We are goodness.
The years of our life on earth have brought us to this moment where we take upon
ourselves the mantle of wise women, revered for our insights and honored for our
knowledge, sisters in commitment to being, doing and having the best. May sacred sensibility be revealed to us. May we be blessed in the presence of each other. May we be grateful to have known each other. May we honor our sacred
story. And we all have a sacred story. We all have a history that has led us to this moment in time. May we have the strength and the courage to find the gift in each
experience. May we offer ourselves for continued service to humanity and to the world.
Have a magical summer! See you at the August 23rd event at my home, 41 McLean Road, 9 am to 12 pm.

Hi Hariett:
Thanks so much for the opportunity to speak to your group yesterday and today. I forgot to mention that the best way to advocate for Alzheimer’s disease and dementia is to raise the question during elections. There is pressure to try to keep people at home for as long as they are able and if you provide a bit of funding for education and support it is a way to help ease the pressure on the long term care bed shortage.
Ashleigh’s quote was:
“Alzheimer’s doesn’t take away memory: your memories are all in there. The part of the brain that’s damaged is the part that gives you access to memory. It’s as if you put the memories in the glove compartment and you lost the key – and the art unlocked it.” - John Zeisel Sociologist and Founder of Artz for Alzheimer’s
The quote I used was:
“She has become fascinated with the “lady in the mirror.” At first she didn’t recognize that this lady as her own reflection. It scared her that “the lady” was mocking her by following her around and imitating everything she did. – Eugene Fields, Ohio
The website I used to get the slide that you liked is listed below. It is really interesting reading and might have other information that will be useful to you.

But if it isn’t within reach today, if the idea of joy is depressing, try one of joy’s younger siblings, instead: Try hope for something a bit better tomorrow, try mild optimism, try ten seconds of peace. My beloved child,
break your heart no longer.
Each time you judge yourself,
you break your own heart,
you stop feeding on the love
which is the wellspring of your vitality.
The time has come. Your time.
To live. To Celebrate.
And to see the goodness that you are.
You, my child, are divine.
You are pure.
You are sublimely free.
You are God in disguise.
And you are always perfectly safe.
Do not fight the dark.
Just turn on the light.
Let go.
And breathe into the goodness that you are.

A thought to share (sent by Kathy Aylett)
She wrote................. I just finished taking an evening class at Stanford. The last lecture was on the mind-body connection--the relationship between stress and disease. The speaker (head of psychiatry at Stanford) said, among other things, that one of the best things that a man could do for his health is to be married to a woman whereas for a woman, one of the best things she could do for her health was to nurture her relationships with her girlfriends. At first everyone laughed, but he was serious.
Women connect with each other differently and provide support systems that help each other to deal with stress and difficult life experiences. Physically this quality "girlfriend time" helps us to create more seratonin--a neurotransmitter that helps combat depression and can create a general feeling of well being. Women share feelings whereas men often form relationships around activities. They rarely sit down with a buddy and talk about how they feel about certain things or how their personal lives are going. Jobs? Yes. Sports? Yes. Cars? Yes. Fishing, hunting, flying, golf? Yes. But their feelings?--rarely. Women do it all of the time. We share from our souls with our sisters, and evidently that is very good for our health. He said that spending time with a friend is just as important to our general health as jogging or working out at a gym.
There's a tendency to think that when we are "exercising" we are doing something good for our bodies, but when we are hanging out with friends, we are wasting our time and should be more productively engaged--not true. In fact, he said that failure to create and maintain quality personal relationships with other humans is as dangerous to our physical health as smoking! So every time you hang out to schmooze with a gal pal, just pat yourself on the back and congratulate yourself for doing something good for your health! We are indeed very very lucky. Sooooo let's toast to our friendship with our girlfriends. Evidence shows it is very good for our health.
Life isn't tied with a bow but it's still a gift.

YOUR MEMOIRS
Memoirs are a story of your life told in short stories or chapters. It is the human and humorous side to your life written in a loose chronological order but it doesn’t have to be exact.
It is about your experiences, feelings and beliefs. In an autobiography, you would state facts like when a new sibling entered your household. In your memoirs, you would disclose your feelings about having a new sister or brother and how their arrival would change the family dynamic.
To begin; you need to create the following so there is a reference point for the reader.
TITLE AND FRONT COVER - A title and picture that reflect your essence and personality – preferably not a posed picture.
PAGE ONE – A TIME LINE OR LIFE LINE. Example below
1948 – April 4 Born in Kirkland Lake. First child of Toini and George.
1951 - Moved to Callander, Ontario because my father purchased the Callander Hotel.
1953 – September Started grade one at Callander Public School. Mr. Davidson was the principle.
1954 – August 21 Flower girl in the wedding of Margaret Morrison to Norm
Nadeau. Reception held at the brand new Lighthouse Lodge.
This is an outline and the details should not be more than two sentences.
PAGE TWO - A FAMILY TREE
This is so the reader knows who the players are. This is NOT a complete genealogy chart. It should only go back as far as relatives that are mentioned in the book. Probably to grand parents – maybe great grandparents. Include uncles and aunts and cousins.
Why write your memoirs?
You are a living connection to the past – a window to another time.
You are part of our social history – you have seen it, been there and have survived.
It gives you the opportunity to re-live and share many pleasant experiences of your past – an enjoyable walk down memory lane.
It allows you to honour and remember people that have influenced you.
It leaves a legacy.
THE STRUCTURE
It’s easiest to divide your life into segments.
The Early Years - birth to high school 0- 12
School Years - high school and college, dances, dating 13- early 20’s
Young Adult – first job, moving, wedding, marriage 20 - 30
Marriage – spouse, family, children late 20’s – 30’s
Raising Children
Earning a Living or Climbing the Career Ladder
Retirement

10. My hope for the next generation
It is helpful to have someone proof read your story in that we often leave out details because we know it in our head and it usually leaves the other person scratching theirs.
The greatest of cause of disease today are diseases of lifestyle...the things we do to ourselves. We are the destinies of our own choices..how we live our lives, day to day.
Bottom line is calories in and calories out. Think about the lies we tell ourselves. They all add up to "I have a reason not to be successful."
You can achieve what ever it is you want but it has to be done step by step. Are you willing to take the next step?

Welcome to Living Fit from the Inside-Out.
What is LFIO?
Living Fit from the Inside-Out is a women’s *fellowship or sisterhood.
*Fellowship-distinguished, extraordinary. The condition of belonging to the same group, united by the same interests, feelings-to live freely and fully, to live passionately, with intention, in love and with purpose . It’s more than a fellowship; it’s a culture of caring, compassion, beauty and personal growth, ordinary women doing extraordinary things, by connecting with others on the journey to be our best physically, mentally, spiritually.
Guiding prinicples
Allow your joy to guide you.
Make everyday great now.
Be grateful. Ask yourself, “What am I going to take out of this experience?”, and then, joyfully move on.
Break out of the box-it’s self-inflicted.
Find the joy of discovery, the unexpected, and the spontaneous, while holding onto to the value of doing all things with love.
Choose to have happiness. The attitude you take into your day affects all of you, your physical, mental and spiritual body and has a ripple effect on those around us. Choose to bring a joyful, healthy attitude to your life and start by being grateful. Build on it little by little, step by step.
Connect with your peace. To connect with your peace, let go of judgment, gossip, criticism and blame. Recognize that we all have challenges and need to encourage each other. We don’t need to have an opinion on everything.
Give yourself permission to be extra-ordinary. Your life will change. Give others the space to do the same and their lives will change too.
Last word? And what makes LF so great? You do !

This week we had the opportunity to welcome back guest speaker, Dr. Kristin Shepherd, on the topic of 'Letting Go'.
Here are some of her insights as I heard it ...
The body responds to how you feel. Learn to go in the direction of your desire.
What's stopping you? Guilt? Blame? These behaviors are like not being awake. What is the anesthetic for you when you no longer want to be present? The truth is you cannot change anything that happened before today. A negative thought is a choice of energy on your part.
How to let go???
Have a sense of humour /a sense of compassion about yourself/the event/the relationship.
Practise instant forgiveness.
Go home, do something, ask for help. Create the desire. I am willing to have this much hope. Do you trust what you want matters. Build the trust that what you want matters. Are you driven by your past? Are you driven by your story?
Choose to change your direction. Shame, blame, guilt can become habit. Is that true or is this a choice of mine to be guilty or shameful or blameful? We can become addicted to feeling depressed and unwell. Say to yourself-I would rather feel better. What is one thing I can do to change my direction? What would make me feel better right here? Watch that when you get in the boat that you get out on the other side. Welcome anger as a big step from depression but remember not to get stuck there. Women tend to turn their anger inward and destroy themselves. Again remember to get off the boat. Do you set your boundaries by what stage of grief you are in? Are you listening? Do you say to yourself, Ï would like to fix this but I don't want to fix that. If you choose to hold on to judgement doing anything to change your life for the better will be difficult. Let your perfectionism go! You can't demand that others response should be what you think it should be.
About guilt: Let the hostages go. I am own my own path. They are on theirs. How much of your identity is wrapped up in what others do or what you think others should do? Are you living your life fully? Things get much better when I back off and let others be who they are.
Stop letting your history be an excuse not to live your life fully.
I can decide what I want out of a relationship. Practise steps that give me understanding that I am not my thoughts. Get to a place of joy and love and you will see joy and love. Change your thoughts. Who's responsability is peace here? Hold a picture of their success and well-being. Being in a loving place is most responsible. Criticism of ourselves makes us critical of others. Try not criticizing yourself, perhaps saying, 'that bothered me, I feel hurt and I don't know what to do about it.' Let go of expectation. Nothing bothers me unless the thing which bothers me resonates within me as well. Go with the 'suchness of cabbage' , 'the suchness of me'. Which love creates the best me? Feel what you feel. I am injured...Get out of the boat...let go...clean your own slate once in a while. We are all doing our best to find our way home.

'JUST A DOG'
In memory of Maxwell Smart Madigan (2000-2010)
"lighten up, it's just a dog,"
or, "that's a lot of money for just a dog."
They don't understand the distance traveled,
the time spent, or the costs involved for
"just a dog."
Some of my proudest moments have come about with
"just a dog."
Many hours have passed and my only company was
"just a dog,"
but I did not once feel slighted.
Some of my saddest moments have been brought about by
"just a dog,"
and in those days of darkness,
the gentle touch of "just a dog"
gave me comfort and reason to overcome the day.
If you, too, think it's "just a dog,"
then you will probably understand phrases
like "just a friend," "just a sunrise," or
"just a promise."
"Just a dog" brings into my life the very essence
of friendship, trust, and pure unbridled joy.
"Just a dog" brings out the compassion and
patience that make me a better person.
Because of "just a dog" I will rise early,
take long walks and look longingly to the future.
So for me and folks like me, it's not "just a dog"
but an embodiment of all the hopes and dreams
of the future, the fond memories of the past,
and the pure joy of the moment.
"Just a dog" brings out what's good in me and
diverts my thoughts away from myself and the
worries of the day.
I hope that someday they can understand that
it's not "just a dog"
but the thing that gives me humanity and keeps
me from being "just a woman."
So the next time you hear the phrase "just a dog."
just smile, because they "just don't understand."

Book Club: From Rick Brandl
It was quite interesting to see and hear the different reactions from the women in your group about the book and as I had stated to everyone, the author did his job and he did it well.
To me, he is like a Master who is able to trigger one's sore spot, without ever having met that person. Reactions from anger, disgust, indignation, loss and even confusion or doubt, all of these were explored. And this is what the characters themselves went through in their lives, even feeling hopeless about a society. When we are able to drop judgment, as I did hear a bit of that, we can then delve somewhat deeper into what he may be actually wanting to say. The Spanish language is quite creative and romantic so, when translated, it may seem somewhat too wordy to us because we are not programmed to that style.
Yes, Latin America is still quite chauvinistic and stuck in it's Machismo attitude, the author highlights this and speaks out against it in his style. This is the reason I like to read a good book more than once or any other book, in order to get a different perspective. At times, it is a great idea to get a better idea of a culture that is being written about. In this way, we once again gain a more knowledgeable perspective of the story and characters in the story. While doing this, we enrich ourselves in the long run.
All perspectives from time, place, culture, situation and so on, can give us a greater appreciation of what is going on in the book. Looking at ways to separate our own emotions and bias can also help. As with the doctor, in his youth he was a hero and to a newer generation, not very heroic. A great example of this would be the books from James Clavell, the Tai Pan/Shogun books.
Hope this helps and if there is anything I may have missed, please let me know. See you soon.
Aloha !

HANNAH BYWATER'S TURTLE PROJECT - UPDATE 2009
Hannah hand delivered that money in Bali February 2009. After her first year of saving her allowance and requesting donations in lieu of birthday gifts, she saved $305 in 2007. Her goal of doubling that amount to $610 in 2008 was greatly exceeded. She could not have done this without local help!
The sea turtle sanctuary was thrilled beyond words for all that Hannah has done for the sea turtles and the environment. The $2,000 converted into 16 million Rupiah. Hannah wanted to share with you how the money will be utilized.
Building an Artificial Reef
Firstly, a 5 metre x 5 metre Bio Rock in the shape of a sea turtle is being fashioned out of metal rebar. This structure will be submerged in the ocean and will eventually be the basis of an artificial reef.
This artificial reef installation, to be aptly named "Hannah's Reef" (Bio Boomer), will serve as an educational tool for a PADI scuba diving certification organization's Reef Gardener Distinctive Specialty course. People from around the world will come to be certified as a "reef gardener" by being trained to scuba dive on live coral reefs, to collect any damaged and/or broken coral and then attach it to the artificial reef structure.
The Bio Rock receives a small electrical current from solar panels assisting the damaged coral to adhere to the artificial reef. In this way coral regenerates at 5 times its natural rate. Hannah's Reef will be providing a location for the recovering coral to grow, a habitat structure for fish and a feeding ground for the very turtles she and other people from around the world have had the honour of releasing.
In 2009 Hannah released 10 baby turtles.Boomer gets a new tank!
Starting a captive breeding program
In addition to constructing the artificial reef, the Turtle Hatchery will enlarge the pool to house a resident adult sea turtle named Boomer. Now at age 18, he has grown to about ¾ of full adult size. Boomer was one of the original hatchlings released from the sanctuary many years ago. He has since been released 5 times but keeps coming back hence the name Boomer, after a boomerang .
Boomer's shell is slightly deformed. The consensus is that he was struck by a passing boat or ship. The turtle sanctuary no longer intends to release him but keep him where he obviously wants to stay. People are able to rub his back and get a good close-up look at this magnificent animal. He absolutely loves this and will twist and turn to ensure you scratch his entire back!
They hope to use Boomer in a captive sea turtle breeding program.
Please pass along Hannah's story to anyone you may know that would be interested in receiving updates from Hannah in the future. tion Project
Although Hannah is very committed to the sea turtles, she also has a very keen interest in helping to save the Orang-utans, another endangered species.
She decided to start supporting the Orang-utans with some of the money raised, and donated $200 to the Sumatran Orang-utan Society(SOS). With this money SOS will plant 75 rainforest trees in her name.
These trees will restore Orang-utan habitat in degraded areas in Northern Sumatra, Indonesia. Sumatra was the location of the most devastating tsunami of our time in 2004.
Hannah continues to sell her carved turtles and raise money to save the sea turtles and the orang-utans. The turtles will be available for $5.00 at Vested Interest Trading in North Bay and Rug A Roo Flooring in Callander. Or you can purchase a turtle at Living Fit March 9 at Hannah's presentation.
For those who are interested, here is the pattern for the dolls that Sandi Foster will bring to children in Kenya. The basic method for making each doll is the same. Begin at the feet and knit a rectangle, changing yarn colour for eachbody segment. Work in stocking stitch throughout.
Cast on 32sts. Work 4 rows for feet.
Change yarn. Work 14 rows for pants.
Change yarn. Work 12 rows for sweater.
Change yarn. Work 8 rows for face.
Change yarn. Work 11 rows for hat as follows:
Rows 1-4: Work evenly in stocking stitch.
Row 5: Dec 5sts evenly across row (27sts).
Row 6: P across row.
Row 7: Dec 5sts evenly across row (22sts).
Row 8: P across row.
Row 9: Dec 5sts evenly across row (17sts).
Row 10: P across row.
Row 11: (K1.K2tog) 8 times.
Draw yarn through remaining sts and pull up.
To finish: 1. Sew sides together to form a centre back seam.
Stuff head. Weave a single strand of matching yarn across the first face
row. Draw up to form neck and secure ends.
Stuff body, drawing in at ankles.(Just sew up bottom if forming a skirt).
Stuff feet and sew up bottom, pulling in as much as possible.
With matching yarn, form arms with small back stitches through all layers from waist to 2 rows beneath the neck. Define legs
in the same way, from bottom to just below waistline. Embroider hair, facial features and add decoration as desired.
Listening is a hugely under-rated skill! By improving this communication skill I can vastly improve my relationships with the people around me. I know that I personally can hone my listening skills and that, in the spirit of change and empowerment, it takes practice on a daily basis. Much like physical exercise, use it or lose it.
Here are some quick pointers that may help you as well.
"When you listen well," Burley-Allen says, "you:
1. acknowledge the speaker;
2. increase the speaker's self-esteem and confidence;
3. tell the speaker, "You are important" and "I am not judging you;"
4. gain the speaker's co-operation;
5. reduce stress and tension;
Quick 'How to' steps:
Stop talking.
Pay attention to the purpose and the words.
Eliminate distractions.
Ask questions, but only after the speaker has finished her thought.
Reflect back what you think you heard.
Listen for facts, beliefs, emotions.
seek first to understand, then to be understood.

Choose Your Attitude
Most of us believe our attitudes are caused directly by outside influences like unpleasant experiences or negative people. But while external pressures may trigger our feelings, we are the ones wearing those feelings like a suit of clothes. We can either be subservient to external events, few of which we have any control over, or we can take charge of our own response.
“Choosing your attitude” is not always putting on a happy face or feeling pressure to adopt the outlook that’s “officially” acceptable. Sometimes angry or sad are what’s called for. That’s why choosing your attitude is about being aware of what your attitude is, and that it does affect you and others. Once you are aware of the impact, you may view your attitude differently, even if the situation or person that upset you hasn’t changed. Then you can ask yourself, “Does my attitude help me or others? Is it helping me be the way I want to be?”
“Choose your attitude” asks only that you make your own choice and not try to pass it off on something or someone else. Once you accept that you are the only one who is choosing your attitude at this moment, you can decide whether to keep it or shape it into an attitude that’s more satisfying. You control your attitude, not the other way around.

You have a choice
Your heart will know
You gotta look back sometime
To know where to go
You have a voice
Long as you live
It's never too small
Whatever you got to give
When your life is low (hold on)
And you want to let go (be strong - hold on)
Remember the dream we had
When there was nothing else
Remember the light that shines
And find it in yourself
Remember the dream is yours
So let it guide your way
And keep it alive with you each day
Don't ever say
You just don't care
the chances you take
Will take you as far as you dare
Don't be afraid
Hold your head high
There's strength in your soul
You never know till you try
When your life is low (hold on)
And you want to let go (be strong -- hold on)
You're not alone .. somebody cares
(Hold on ...be strong)
When you're walkin' the road
With those who been there
(You're not alone)
Remember the dream is yours
So let it guide your way
And keep it alive with you each day.

HOW DO YOU LIVE YOUR DASH
I read of a man who stood to speak
At the funeral of a friend
He referred to the dates on her tombstone
From the beginning....to the end.
He noted that first came her date of birth
And spoke the following date with tears,
But he said what mattered most of all
Was the dash between those years. (1934-1999)
For that dash represents all the time
That she spent alive on earth
And now only those who loved her
Know what that little line is worth.
For it matters not, how much we own,
The cars...the house...the cash,
What matters is how we live and love
And how we spend our dash.
So think about this long and hard...
Are there things you would like to change?
For you never know how much time is left,
That can still be rearranged.
If we could just slow down enough
To consider what is true and real
And always try to understand
The way other people feel,
And be less quick to anger,
And show appreciation more
And love the people in our lives
Like we have never loved before.
If we treat each other with respect,
And more often wear a smile
Remembering that this special dash
Might only last a little while.
So, when your eulogy is being read
With your life actions to rehash...
Would you be proud of the things they say
About how you spent your dash?

Smiling is infectious;
you catch it like the flu.
When someone smiled at me today,
I started smiling too!
I passed around the corner,
and someone saw my grin.
When he smiled, I realized
I’d passed it on to him!
I thought about that smile;
then I realized its worth.
A single smile, just like mine,
could travel around the earth.
So, if you feel a smile begin,
don’t leave it undetected.

Wild Geese
(Mary Oliver)
You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
for a hundred miles through the desert, repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.
Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountains and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again.
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting--
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.

THE TRUE JOY OF LIFE
George Bernard Shaw (1856 - 1950), the inimitable Irish-born comic dramatist, playwright, literary critic and socialist propagandist won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1925. This man certainly knew how to live life to it's fullest, and reminded us to do the same during our brief sojourn on this planet called Earth.
A man of with an impeccaby biting wit and and wry sense of humor, he never failed to deliver the zings and arrows of outrageous fortune when the times demanded it.
On the subject of old bones, he had this to say:
"If you cannot get rid of the family skeleton, you may as well make it dance." This is a wise piece of advice to those who have a lot of dead wood in their family trees!
George had a rather unadulteredly centered view of himself, not to mention his place in the scheme of things: "I often quote myself. It adds spice to my conversation."
But this man of mirth also found time to write this pithy piece of poetry which we might all take heed of as we write our "bucket list".
True Joy of Life
This is the true joy of life.
The being used for a purpose
Recognized by yourself as a mighty one.
The being a force of nature
Instead of a feverish, selfish
Little clod of ailments and grievances
Complaining that the world will not
Devote itself to making you happy.
I am of the opinion that my life
Belongs to the whole community
And as long as I live,
It is my privilege to do for it
Whatever I can.
I want to be thoroughly
Used up when I die,
For the harder I work the more I live.
I rejoice in life for its own sake.
Life is no brief candle to me.
It is a sort of splendid torch
Which I've got hold of
For the moment
And I want to make it burn
As brightly as possible before
Handling it on to future generations.
All of which raises the inevitable question, how are you living your life, and what do you wish to pass on to future generations?
ATTITUDE............
I promise to keep on living as though I expected to live forever. Nobody grows old by merely living a number of years. People grow old only be deserting their ideals. Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up interest wrinkles the soul. Douglas McArthur-
Rising to the challenge of self-discovery.
Simply being you! Acknowledging Your Spirit, the relationship we have with ourselves and how we take care of ourselves and stand on our own. Making it happen, putting one foot in front of the other as a gesture of self-care. Consider that you are on a scale or tetter-totter of balance when it comes to your acts of self-care (wellness). Life experiences will creep in inevitably. The influence of those experiences is all around you, with the ability to tip the scales toward or away from optimal wellness. And you can tip the scales in either direction as well, according to how you choose to deal with those experiences. Think about deliberately offering more thought to tipping the scales toward optimal wellness through your choices and think about how that will manifest itself in the steps that you take today, hour by hour, minute by minute (ACTION). Set your intention to look at events from the inside out. It's not always easy but it's necessary...
Einstein’s Definition
Albert Einstein said “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results”. Think about this quote for a second and ask yourself, does this quote apply to the way you live your life?
Have you been doing some things over and over again expecting different results? If so, then you might want to keep on reading. It simply comes down to, are you accepting and harnessing your personal power or rejecting it. Are you willing to change or will you do the same thing over and over again?
“If It Ain’t Broke Then Don’t Fix It!” Mentality
Are you expecting to increase the quality of your life by continuing the same strategy day after day, year after year? If so, how long do you think the method will work?
Many people simply do not see the need to update or change their current lifestyle. They believe that there is no need to invest in a making a lifestyle change when the old habits don’t seem be doing any harm. This is the common, “If it ain’t broke then don’t fix it!” mentality. But just because something isn’t “broke” doesn’t mean you can’t make it work better. When healthier habits, could save you energy, and keep you out of the doctor’s office, and improve the quality of your life how can you not accept it?
Think about exploring other ways of being healthy and well. With each step ask yourself, “Is this a healthy choice? Is this unhealthy for me?” on a physical, mental and spiritual level. Reflect on the balance between healthy and unhealthy choices at the end of the day. Resolve to make grace-chip deposits (healthy choices). Consider making a plan (heart steps) for sustainable good habits as you start a new day. Choose to live a joyful, healthy, loving life with heart steps that support your resolve. It may not be easy in the beginning and you may not get it right everytime….but it’s necessary.
Love, peace and joy

EATING OUT – Comments by Anna Aylett
November 11, 2008
1) Choose restaurants with healthier choices/substitutions (and avoid buffets at ALL costs).
2) PLAN to eat healthier before you even walk in the door (i.e., if you leave it up until the moment the waiter asks if you’d like fries with that – the answer will always be YES – so choose before hand to get it with salad or rice, etc.
3) When it comes to the large servings: a) doggie bag half of your meal as soon as you get your plate, (b) ask for half servings, (c) split an entrée with someone else. (d) Kathy’s comment – order an appetizer for the main course.
4) Avoid appetizers (and just one bread basket) – (Kathy’s comment: or no bread basket).
5) Wait 20 minutes before ordering dessert – the “fullness” feeling will have caught up to you by then. (Kathy’s comment: or share with others).
6) Every now and then, get the fries, with a side of gravy or even poutine!!! (Kathy’s comment: I like this one – Anna is 29; we are maybe double her age – so, when we do this – order the smallest size on the menu).
7) Kathy’s comments: Lucky us – that we can eat out or in - that it’s our choice. Life is good.
8) Don’t forget to order a glass of water (with lemon) if it isn’t automatically served.
INSPIRATIONS
"Believe in yourself, your personal power and come together in goodness."
"No one is better than you. Anything you want, anything that you want to do, that you set your mind to it and go get it. My father told me that all my life and I truly believed it when Barack Obama stepped on the stage to accept his victory. At that moment all of my excuses for not making a difference fell away. You can make a difference. The promise of life is the practise of life. Nothing in my life is going to be without purpose. True happiness is to be in service to humanity. Every relationship has purpose. My life, my work, my family has purpose, and I won't waste time wasting moments. Make your life and make others lives better."

I learned that........"Always look on the bright side of life". Look for the humour in every situation. Fear and insecurity can be debilitating. "I'm not dead yet." Living Fit women are strong women! Save yourself, not the world. I can take care of myself...even in NYC. Look at life experiences and their impact on you from the inside/out. Thanks to the 53 women who made this trip a fantastic adventure!Something to think about....Beyond Belief with John Balfe
John invited us to explore how our belief systems shift and change and exposed us to the writings of Florence Scovel Shinn, author of How to Play the Game of Life.
Some excerpts from John's presentation: So many people see life as a battle, win or lose, defeat or defeated, an imperialistic perspective. Think of life as a game and know how the game will go. Whatever you sow, you will reap. Words and thoughts are a tremendous vibratory source. Think about what you are saying and what you are thinking. Have a vision, dream, plan. Be as children and make believe. Notice people that exhibit these traits. They lift up and transcend. Go beyond fear. Fear is a learned behavior. Stop and face your fears, then let go. Florence's mantra..."I cast this burden and go free" If I hold on to the burden it will claim me. Use the power of love in word and action. Then watch for the Divine to reach back to you. Know the truth which makes you free.
Make something beautiful with your life.ASSENT by Peggy Guditus (70 something)
If I am not content
with the season in which I live,
perhaps I have not learned how to live.
If the snow falls on my white head
rushes against my cheek, bites,
then buries the bottom branches of the pine,
why should I wish for spring?
Or when spring comes,
time to look for spring buds
and crocus heads
should I think of raking errant leaves,
forsaking spring without a May Day crown?
Memories are for yesterday.
Dreams are for tomorrow.
But this day I will hold, twist, turn,
holding, twisting, turning each new day
until I find the magic in it.
then I will go to a mountain
and help the sun rise.
If you had no fear, how fit would you really and truly want to be? What does your healthy self look like? What do you need to change in order for you to be your healthy self? What is stopping you? Consider physical exercise as part of your spiritual practise. What everyday rituals have you put in place to move toward your ideal healthy self?
Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try Again. Fail again. Fail better. —Samuel Beckett
Garry with "Santa" Christmas 2007.
Hi everyone!
Looking forward to getting back to Living Fit and hope you are too. It's been quite a summer of water, rain, highs, and lows. Such is life... I recently received an email with these words on it. "Life is good. Living it is better." And I thought that those words probably could have come from our dear friend and mentor, Dr. Garry Shulman. How lucky we were to have had the counsel and wisdom of Garry for his "Living Fit girls" for so many years. Garry believed that we all have a gift. " And the challenge is to bring our gifts to light in a positive way. When matched with passion it can make a profound contribution to ourselves, our community, and the world." Again, I'm looking forward to seeing you again this fall. Our theme is self-discovery, connecting with the best part of who we really are, sharing what we have learned through our life experiences, working at making everyday living better and making mental, emotional, relational, and physical self-care a part of our spiritual exercise.
If you get an opportunity, raise a glass (of whatever) to Garry. His energy is with us forever......

Goodness Ceremony, June 3, 2008
Remembering Toni Brown…….
No matter what your condition pms, no matter where you find yourself in the universe, your choice is always the same. To expand your awareness or contract it. Toni’s choice was to expand. Toni’s choice was goodness.
If Toni was here I think she would echo these words as well:
Allow your joy to guide you.
Make everyday great now.
Be grateful. Ask yourself, “What am I going to take out of this experience?”, and then, joyfully move on.
Break out of the box you have made for yourself. Find the joy of discovery, the unexpected, and the spontaneous, while holding onto to the value of doing all things with love.
Choose to have happiness. The attitude you take into your day affects all of you, your physical, mental and spiritual body. Choose to bring a joyful, healthful attitude to your life and start by being grateful. Build on it little by little. Connect with your peace. Let go of judgment and don’t should on anybody.
Goodness ceremony
As a generation, we are growing into our wisdom. The wise have seen the light at the center of things, and the light at the center of things is who we are. We gather today to celebrate this important assembly of wise women. We are beloved. We are daughter, mother and sister to the world. We are goodness.
The years of our life on earth have brought us to this moment where we take upon ourselves the mantle of wise women, goodness, revered for our insights and honored for our knowledge.
To all of us, having lived these years, having seen what we have seen, and cried the tears of troubled times, we now acknowledge that we have climbed the ladder to wisdom, goodness and unconditional love. May sacred sensibility be revealed to us. May we be blessed in the presence of each other. May we be grateful to have known each other.
We all have a sacred story. We all have a history that has led us to this moment in time. May we have the strength and the courage to forgive and bless past times. May we offer ourselves for continued service to humanity and to the world. We claim full blessings of our maturity, the value of our experience to now share in faith and inspiration to all who seek our counsel.
Light a candle and welcome each other into the goodness/wise women years, the sisterhood.
Essence of all that is good, Divine Mystery.
We thank you for the years gone by, and we thank you for the years ahead.
We women have lived. We have seen the cycles of life and death.
We have rejoiced at morning and mourned its passing.
Thus we have gained sacred knowledge.
The power to heal through the depth of our compassion.
The power to teach through the depth of our understanding.
The power to bring forth a new and better world through the depth of our vision.
May all now see in each other and may we see within ourselves, the wise one, the goodness, the one who holds the candle of illumination for all the world to see.
May our hearts be as a womb to new life.
May we become a channel of good as never before.
May the generation behind us receive strength and comfort from our being here.
May a cycle now begin for all of us, more powerful than any other, most glorious of all.
May we honor the light and the shadow in ourselves and others, letting go of judgement and recognizing the sacredness of every journey.
May we be honored and revered.
May we now be blessed.
May we now know peace.
Awomen.
STORY
A young wife sat on a sofa on a hot humid day, drinking iced tea and
visiting with her Mother. As they talked about life, about marriage, about
the responsibilities of life and the obligations of adulthood, the mother
clinked the ice cubes in her glass thoughtfully and turned a clear, sober
glance upon her daughter 'Don't forget your Sisters,' she advised, swirling
the tea leaves to the bottom of her glass. 'They'll be more important as you
get older. No matter how much you love your husband, no matter how much you
love the children you may have, you are still going to need Sisters.
'Remember to go places with them now and then; do things with
them. Remember that 'Sisters' means ALL the women.....your girlfriends,
your daughters, and all your other women relatives too. 'You'll need other
women. Women always do.'
What a funny piece of advice!' the young woman thought. Haven't I just
gotten married? Haven't I just joined the couple-world? I'm now a married
woman, for goodness sake! A grownup! Surely my husband and the family we
may start will be all I need to make my life worthwhile!
But she listened to her Mother. She kept contact with her Sisters and made
more women friends each year. As the years tumbled by, one after another,
she gradually came to understand that her Mom really knew what she was
talking about. As time and nature work their changes and their mysteries
upon a woman, Sisters are the mainstays of her life.
After more than 50 years of living in this world, here is what I've learned:
Time passes.
Life happens.
Distance separates.
Children grow up.
Jobs come and go.
Love waxes and wanes.
Men don't do what they're supposed to do.
Hearts break.
Parents die.
Colleagues forget favours.
Careers end.
BUT.........
Sisters are there, no matter how much time and how many miles are between
you. A girl friend is never farther away than needing her can reach.
When you have to walk that lonesome valley and you have to walk it by
yourself, the women in your life will be on the valley's rim, cheering you
on, praying for you, pulling for you, intervening on your behalf, and
waiting with open arms at the valley's end.
Sometimes, they will even break the rules and walk beside you...Or come in
and carry you out.
Girlfriends, daughters, granddaughters, daughters-in-law, sisters,
sisters-in-law, Mothers, Grandmothers, aunties, nieces, cousins, and
extended family, all bless our life! The world wouldn't be the same
without women, and neither would I.
When we began this adventure called womanhood, we had no idea of the
incredible joys or sorrows that lay ahead. Nor did we know how much we
would need each other. Every day, we need each other still.
Pass this on to all the women who help make your life meaningful. I
just did!
Have a great summer, active, healthy summer!

What brings you joy? Allow your joy to guide you. Make your day great now , in the present. Learn to express gratitude for whatever life brings your way. Ask, "what am I going to take out of this experience and joyfully move on?"
Choose to have happiness. Scientific studies have shown that the attitude and energy you take into the day affects your mental, emotional and your physical body. Choose to bring a joyful, mor helathful attitude to your life. Start with being grateful and build on it little by little. Connect with your peace by meditating for 3 minutes a day, breathing in and out of your heart centre. Whatever is happening in your life find the joy in the situation by accepting what is.
Healing vs Curing
Healing has little to do with the removal or ending of symptoms. Rather, it is an intimate and integrative process that encompasses the entire spectrum of our existence. Healing transcends the simplistic notion of throwing away the crutches and walking again, or the sudden cessation of back pain; it involves the harmonious alignment of the physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of our being and how we relate to the world. The result is a greater experience of wholeness, wellness , and soundness. And wholeness is the birthright of everyone.
Healing is basically the result of putting right our wrong relationships with our bodies, to other people, and to our own complicated minds; with emotions and instincts at war with one another and not properly understood by what we call "I" or "me" The process is one of reorganization, reintegration of things that have come apart.
Healing and Curing are not two words that mean the same thing. The word "heal" traces its roots to the Anglo-Saxon word hal, which means 'whole', 'hale', and 'hearty'. Rather than implying freedom from disease, healing involves root concepts like wholeness and wellness. These concepts imply self-empowerment, alignment, and integration, which enables us to fully express our unique potential as human beings. Healing may often be an uncomfortable process, but always empowering.
As we heal, it may appear that we are coming apart at the seams when we begin to wake up aspects of ourselves that we were unaware of or unable to acknowledge. But as we begin the process of discovery, acknowlegement and alignment, we give our entire being permission to change. Through the natural, automatic release of old thought patterns, old emotions, and rigid ways of being, a new sense of respect for all aspects of our rhythms comes about. This is similar to the subtle, yet purposeful opening of a flower. In healing, no new magic is put into us, and nothing is taken out.
Curing, on the other hand, implies that someone is trying to eliminate our diseases, symptoms, or crises - most commonly through medication, surgery, psychotherapy, or other modalities. Curing may be conceptualized as the elimination of the signs and symptoms of disease, but not necessarily the disease itself. Typically, people enter the health care system when the indicators of illness can no longer be ignored. The signs and symptoms will be treated with medication, or if they are severe enough, hospitalization will ensue. If, after a cetain course of treatment, the signs and symptoms no longer exist, we declare the person cured.
Curing has an important role. It offers us the gift of time so we may better understand the deeper significance of our diseases. Curing can also offer us a greater degree of comfort to facilitate the process of healing. This can be beneficial. However, in the medical world today, the process stops with the cure. Healing is rarely, if ever, encountered. This denies the possibility of healing rather than facilitating it. Curing, as an attempt to control our experiences, generally interferes with our ability to move into the unsolicited experiences we need to restructure our lives. When this occurs, curing holds us back.
Healing leaves in its wake a sense of accomplishment and empowerment. Curing does not. Healing considers our uniqueness, curing does not. Healing involves surrenduring control of our inner and outer experiences. Curing involves an attempt to control these experiences. Healing promotes wholeness, an uninhibited expression of natura rhythms, and unprovoked forgiveness. Curing seeks to label the effects (not the causes) of disease, place blame, promote victimization, and give explanations and excuses for undesirable experiences.
One should always look for the opportunity to heal. No matter what a person may be going through, healing empowers a person to greater heights of personal awareness. It brings us peace, and allows us to live in peace and wellness. This is the essence of true health.

Song of the Builders
by Mary Oliver
On a summer morning
I sat down
on a hillside
to think about God -
a worthy pastime.
Near me, I saw
a single cricket;
it was moving the grains of the hillside
this way and that way.
How great was its energy,
how humble its effort.
Let us hope
it will always be like this,
each of us going on
in our inexplicable ways
building the universe.
